Mengikut kajian Universiti Yale selama 30 tahun, hanya ada 5 orang sahaja yang mempunyai kedudukan kewangan yang kukuh dalam setiap 100 orang. Hanya 5 % sahaja. Memeranjatkan? Tidak, kerana kebenarannya ada di depan mata kita setiap hari.

DIRECT SELLING ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA MEMBERS RECORD RM2.7 BILLION TURNOVER

Petaling Jaya, May 18, 2006 – Members of the Direct Selling Association of Malaysia (DSAM) continued to record an impressive increase with a combined sales turnover of RM2.7billion in 2005, an increase of RM20 million from 2004. This represents almost half of the direct selling industry’s estimated sales turnover of RM5.8billion in 2005.

The largest contribution by product range to the sales turnover came from nutritional products, skin care and cosmetics products as well as personal care products. The combined turnover came from its 66 members which included listed companies such as Amway (Malaysia) Holdings Berhad, Hai-O Enterprise Bhd, Caely Holdings Bhd; CNI Holdings Berhad, multi-nationals such as Shaklee Products (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Sunrider International (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Nu Skin (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd as well as home-grown companies such as Gano Excel Enterprise (M) Sdn Bhd, Zhulian Marketing Sdn Bhd and Elken Sdn Bhd.

There are 533 licensed direct selling companies in Malaysia. In revealing the members’ 2005 turnover at DSAM’s Annual General Meeting recently, its President, Paul Yee said: “2005 marks the seventh consecutive year in which DSAM members recorded an increase in sales turnover. Their sterling performance is due to the key initiatives they have undertaken to ensure continued growth and sustainability in the industry.” One key factor attributing to the growth in turnover included the increase in distributor productivity as the number of distributors has remained constant in the last few years.

Other initiatives consisted of members leveraging on introducing new products, heightened product promotions, enhanced incentive programmes and continued investment in product and business opportunity training programmes to support the retailing and recruitment efforts of their distributors.

In 2005 alone, member companies invested a total of RM16 million in training, reflecting the direct selling companies’ continuous emphasis and commitment in promoting knowledgeable and ethical conduct amongst its distributors. Reinforcing one of its roles in helping to spur the growth of local manufacturers, DSAM members spent RM293 million in total expenses for the purchase of products from local manufacturers last year, up nearly 12% from RM262 million in 2004.

Concluded Yee: “DSAM expects that the outlook for 2006 for its member companies will be challenging given the rising cost of goods, but the industry has proven to be resilient in both strong and weak economic times because of the income opportunity that it offers. “Our direct selling companies continue to emphasize on the delivery of quality products and attractive incentive programmes to make direct selling a viable business option for more people. In doing so, we expect the momentum for the industry to be on an upward trend and we should see another year of growth, barring any unforeseen circumstances.”

Winning Woman: Patty Matlock, Independent Distributor with Shaklee. I am in New Jersey but my business is international, 5 countries and now soon to be in 50 countries.
I am married to my childhood sweetheart Tim. We have been married for 13 years and dating for 27. No children. We have several cute Sled dogs.

Background:
I was in the Information Technology field for 16 years. I enjoyed my career and worked with some great people over the years. However, the IT field required a lot of hours and was very stressful. I would work 12 to 15 hours a day and travel several times a year. The more people became dependent on technology the more demanding my job became. People can’t live without their computer or email for more than 10 minutes. Everything was a fire. My work became more important than my family. The stress began taking a toll on me.

Why direct sales?
I met a woman at a networking group who had her own Shaklee business. She always seemed relaxed and not hurried. She would talk about the high quality natural vitamins. How they were whole food and plants, how they contained no chemicals and pesticides, and the integrity of the company etc.. I was very interested. I was taking good supplements for years and was getting low. One meeting she said, do you know anyone who wants to feel better, look younger and have more energy? I said yes, me. I bought some products from her in hopes she would give me some business and I was amazed at how great I felt the first week.

I shared this with my friends and family. Everyone loved the products and their results and started using the products monthly. Sheree said, “Patty, why don’t you start your own Shaklee business, I can help you?” I thought oh I am so busy with my stressful computer career etc. It didn’t take me long to realize the quality and the integrity of this 50 year old company and what a great opportunity and life style this would be. So I am happy to say, I left my stressful computer career and I have a successful Shaklee home business.

A big success for me recently was my 74 year old mother had said she has accomplished all her goals and dreams in life except one. That was to go to Tahiti. Since my dad passed away, mom does not have anyone to travel with. When she told me it was her life long dream and my dad always wanted to take her there and never got the chance and would I go with her I said of course I would. If I was still in my computer career working for someone else, I would have never been able to go to Tahiti with my mother for 15 days. My mom has been all over the world and said this was the best trip she ever had. Now that’s success!

Tried and true advice
My 3 tips would be, have fun, stay focused and NEVER give up. With Shaklee you own your own business but you are never in business for yourself. The people In Shaklee are the best most helpful people I know. I have established a successful lifelong business as well as great lifelong friends.

Shaklee aims big in Asia

THE United States’ leading natural nutritional group, Shaklee Corp, has earmarked Asia as its new growth market, with Malaysia playing a pivotal role as the gateway to strengthen its businesses within the region.

Chairman and chief executive officer Roger Barnett said that it was “timely” for Shaklee to venture abroad, particularly into Asia’s newly emerging economies such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

Roger BarnettHe said Shaklee’s Malaysian operation was an excellent platform to launch Shaklee products in Asia due to its multi-cultural aspects and centralised location within the region.
“We foresee Shaklee’s Asian business to double over the next five years, with the opening of new markets like Taiwan and China to fuel our future growth significantly,” Barnett told StarBiz in an interview in conjunction with Shaklee’s 50th anniversary in San Francisco.
The event attracted more than 10,000 distributors from its five global marketing countries – Malaysia, Japan, Mexico, Canada and the US.

Barnett said Shaklee had set its goal to operate in 50 countries and secure sales worth US$5bil within the next one decade. “I believe this target is achievable, given the increasing worldwide awareness on the importance of natural nutrition and health supplements,” he added.
The Shaklee brand represents one of the most well established names in the nutritional supplement and direct selling industries.

The group is also one of the leading providers of premium quality, natural nutrition and personal care products, environmentally friendly household products, and state-of-the-art air and water treatment systems.

According to Barnett, Shaklee has built a solid position in the US since its establishment in 1959. He added that the group’s expansion into five marketing countries has generated over 750,000 distributors worldwide.

To maintain its leading natural nutrition group status, Shaklee has also spent about US$250mil in research and development over the years in both its existing and new innovative product lines.

Grant PaceShaklee International Inc president Grant Pace, meanwhile, admits that Shaklee was slightly behind in terms of international expansion compared with competitors such as Amway, Herbalife and Avon, which are well represented in 40 to 50 countries.

Prior to Roger Barnett’s acquisition of Shaklee in 2004, he said the group was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, which was one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Japan for 15 years.

“Yamanouchi’s real interest in acquiring Shaklee in 1989 was to get a foothold in the US pharmaceutical market and not for global expansion,” he added.

On its 11-year-old Shaklee Malaysia unit, Pace said: “It was like a forgotten flower previously but is now one of the fastest growing markets for Shaklee worldwide.”

To date, there are about 100,000 Shaklee distributors in Malaysia. The Malaysian unit is the third largest contributor to the Shaklee group after the US and Japan.

“We are in the process of getting halal certification for all our products in Malaysia and we hope to achieve this within the next 17 months,” he added.

Pace said Shaklee’s venture into Taiwan, Hong Kong and China would generate new opportunities for Shaklee Malaysia distributors to expand their sales network.

“We believe our Taiwanese distributors can be recruited in Malaysia and vice-versa to take full advantage of the strong Chinese markets,” he said.

He said Malaysian distributors would benefit most from Shaklee’s expansion into Asia’s major Chinese markets as they were more exposed to the network marketing business models.

“We are waiting for the direct-selling licence approval from China. Just imagine the business opportunities for Malaysian distributors once the highly populated China market is opened to the Shaklee group,” he added.

The anniversary celebration also saw the launching of Shaklee’s two new products – non-toxic biodegradable household cleaner Get Clean and weight management product Cinch.

“Kami melihat Shaklee Products (M) Sdn Bhd (Shaklee Malaysia) sebagai batu loncatan yang strategik menembusi pasaran negara terbabit berikutan keupayaan dwibahasa rakyatnya dan budaya yang boleh menarik pengguna di pasaran yang menuturkan bahasa Cina sepenuhnya.

“Keupayaan bertutur dalam banyak bahasa menjadi kelebihan bagi Shaklee untuk meluaskan pasaran ke Taiwan, Hong Kong dan China,” kata Roger ketika ditemui selepas majlis sambutan ulang tahun ke-50 penubuhan syarikat itu di San Francisco, AS, baru-baru ini.Sambutan ulang tahun yang diadakan secara besar-besaran pada 16 hingga 20 Ogos lalu dihadiri 10,000 pengedarnya dari seluruh dunia, termasuk 100 dari Malaysia.

Turut hadir, Pengurus Besar Shaklee Malaysia, Julie Yeap.Pada majlis itu, Roger turut mengumumkan Taiwan sebagai pangkalan baru Shaklee dan melancarkan dua produk baru Shaklee bagi penjagaan rumah dan kesihatan, Get Clean dan Cinch.

Roger berkata, beliau kagum dengan pengembangan produk Shaklee di Malaysia yang berjaya mengumpulkan 100,000 pengedar dalam masa 11 tahun sejak penubuhannya.Beliau berkata, Malaysia kini semakin penting kepada operasi syarikat memandangkan ia adalah pasaran ketiga terbesar selepas Jepun dan AS.

“Selepas 50 tahun beroperasi, Shaklee kini bertapak kukuh di lima negara iaitu Kanada, Jepun, Malaysia, Mexico dan Amerika Syarikat dengan keahlian hampir sejuta di dunia.“Bagi 50 tahun akan datang, Shaklee berhasrat untuk mengembangkan sayapnya ke 50 negara dengan sasaran perolehan sebanyak AS$5 bilion,” katanya.

Beliau berkata, Shaklee sudah membelanjakan lebih AS$250 juta untuk penyelidikan dan pembangunan (R&D).Katanya, ini menunjukkan betapa seriusnya Shaklee bagi menghasilkan produk berkualiti untuk pengguna.

Sementara itu, Presiden Shaklee International Inc, Grant Pace, berkata, Shaklee Corporation mencatatkan perolehan RM1.86 bilion pada tahun lalu, dijana anak syarikatnya yang beroperasi di lima negara.“Daripada jumlah ini, Malaysia penyumbang ketiga terbesar,” katanya.
